Arts on Waters

“The creative placemaking project, Arts on Waters (2019- 2020) is a critical part of the City of Savannah’s multi-pronged approach to revitalizing Waters Avenue. From new sidewalks, street trees, and pedestrian lighting to investment incentives and improved zoning, the City has undertaken a wide range of corridor revitalization initiatives along this key target corridor. By leveraging proven creative placemaking tools, Arts on Waters aims to build on Savannah’s artistic energy and attract residents of all backgrounds to celebrate the surrounding communities. Led by the cross-collaboration between the City of Savannah’s Economic Development and Cultural Resources Departments, a request for proposals was made for local visual artists to produce new work for the curated storefronts. A committee comprised of local arts professionals and city employees was created to review proposals. Selection criteria was based on works that were representative of the community and inspired, engaged, and celebrated the surrounding neighborhoods and its residents. The ongoing city-funded program commissions new work from local artists on quarterly basis.
